** Highlights **

Snowmobiling in Houghton Lake and Roscommon County is like a visit to a winter playground. Hougton Lake is the hub for numerious snowmobile trails. 200 miles of groomed trails start just south of Denton Township Cemetery of Owens Road in Prudenville.

The 25 mile Prudenville trail is an easy route passing through beautiful scenery over flat and hilly terrain, past isolated lakes, natural pine stands, and old railroad beds and trickling streams.

The 67 mile Leota trail branches off to the west and heads further to the south, wandering through pine forests, oil fields, open areas and leads to Leota, a small community where food, refreshments and gas may be purchased.

Intermediate length trails connect to both the Prudenville trail and the Leota routes, and end at Elbow Lake in northern Clare County.

On Houghton Lake's north west shore, the Blue trail currently continues north connecting with the West Higgins Lake trail leading to Grayling, or leading west on the Stratford Grass Lake and Miss-Kal trails towards Cadillac.

Use caution if traveling on frozen lakes and streams. Please, always remember that open water may exist under bridges and where rivers and streams enter into lakes even after the rest of the lakes and rivers may be frozen. Be constantly watchful for pressure cracks on lakes. Be especially careful not to let alcohol interfere with your safety and the safety of others. Show consideration and caution for other people and wild game. Always travel at safe speeds, especially after dark, and travel at speeds allowing you to stop within the area illuminated by your headlights. Use the "buddy system" in case of problems in cold weather.
